Helping Iowans With Chronic Mental Illness Maintain Their Independence

Habilitative services (HAB) help adults who have chronic mental illnesses live successfully in their own homes and communities. At Advantages In Life, our staff promotes personal independence by assisting our clients with:

  • Skills training
  • Cleaning
  • Community integration
  • Other supports to achieve overall health and social well-being.
  • Assistance with scheduling and managing medical appointments
  • Menu planning, grocery shopping, and budgeting
  • Transportation
  • Assistance and advocacy with medical appointments
  • Assistance with personal cares
  • Medication administration
  • Supervision for safety
  • Assistance for members with coping skills and mental health exacerbation
  • Advocate for members’ needs
  • Assistance with budgeting and finances in the home and community
  • Daily goals tailored to each member’s person centered service plan
These in-home services are based on each client’s wants and needs, from intermittent services to daily, 24-hour support.

How to Qualify for Habilitation Services

Members may be eligible for HCBS Habilitation waiver service by meeting the following criteria: Be an Iowa resident and a United States citizen or a person of foreign birth with legal entry into the United States. Have a diagnosis of chronic mental health diagnosis as determined by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Be determined eligible for Medicaid (Title XIX). Members may be Medicaid-eligible before accessing waiver services or be determined eligible through the application process for the waiver program.
